The Mandrake Vehicles est un cycle de trois poèmes multiformes composés par Oni Buchanan et animés par Betsy Stone Mazzoleni. Chaque poème possède sept stades différents. Les phases un, quatre et sept présentent trois versions distinctes du poème: une première plus longue porte sur les propriétés de la mandragore; une deuxième (version intermédiaire) est remplie de références occultes; et une troisième présente des images violentes du monde contemporain. Les quatre autres phases sont des états transitionnels, où un nombre toujours plus grand de lettres se détache pour former des mots surnuméraires étranges, relégués au bas de l'écran: par exemple, «pathetic gossamer dentist arboreal Zoroastrian garnish hobbit vacuous deet raccoon soirée lectern banal montage Gethsemane oriflamme fedora cursory ballot». The Mandrake Vehicles se pense ainsi comme un genre de cycle initiatique, où la simplification grandissante de chaque poème est vécue comme une forme d'illumination. Notons que l'internaute se promène d'un état à l'autre dans chaque poème à l'aide d'un menu situé au haut de l'écran (liens numérotés de 1 à 7, présentés en ordre croissant).

Notes:

Each of the three Mandrake vehicles is presented here in seven stages. Each vehicle begins with a large text block (sometimes spoken in the voices of the plants themselves) concerning the biological development, folklore, occult ritual, magical association, and medicinal/homeopathic usages of the mandrake plant. In selecting material for the Mandrake vehicles, I conflated some of the more famous occult associations of the European mandrake with the biological structure and development of (as well as the many diverse associations relating to) the American mandrake, also known as the mayapple. Both the European and the American mandrakes have a rhizomatous root structure, meaning that the plants themselves are all connected underground by horizontal subterranean stems shooting off from the vertical root of each individual plant. This rhizomatous characteristic of the plants gave rise to the form of the Mandrake vehicles.
